Il fait chaud partout, c’est sûr. Il fait un peu moins chaud à Amsterdam qu’à Paris, mais quand même. Prenez l’air! Sortez de la ville, en voiture, en car, en train, ou en vélo (électrique). Éloignez-vous des foules de touristes, il suffit d’une vingtaine de kilomètres, et vous êtes dans un monde différent, la région pittoresque appelée « Gooi« . Et plus précisément Naarden, une très vieille ville (1350!) fortifiée (Naarden Vesting), avec un festival de photographie en prime. Et pas n’importe quel festival. Biennal, il en est déjà à sa 18e édition.

Le thème de ce festival ? « Chez soi ». Tout un programme – voire des programmes, car de quel chez soi parle-t-on ? Certains photographes, d’origine étrangère, ont choisi de montrer le pays où ils – ou leurs (grands)parents – sont nés, d’autres au contraire ont opté pour une image, un symbole de leur « chez-soi » actuel.

D’autres photographes encore ont photographié un endroit où ils se sentaient « chez eux » – même le Pole Nord…

Certaines photos paraissent plutôt abstraites, ou « travaillées » par l’artiste photographe. La photo ci-contre, de la main de Vincent Zanni, montre la maison qui fut celle des grands-parents suisse, mais qui après la mort de sa grand-mère sera démolie… Zanni l’a photographié sous toutes les coutures, puis il a froissé les clichés, avant de les plonger dans un bain de gélatine et de les enfermer dans un cadre de plexi. Ainsi, les photos font l’effet de souvenirs…

Le festival s’étend sur l’ensemble de la ville fortifiée – y compris les fortifications elles-mêmes, ainsi que la tour de l’église… Le parcours compte des escaliers parfois bien raides, et aussi des pavés, et de ce fait, tous les endroits ne sont pas accessibles à tous. Mais croyez-moi, même pour les moins valides, il y a pas mal de choses à voir. Ça vaut le déplacement.

Informations pratiques

Naarden se trouve à environ 25 kilomètres d’Amsterdam, et autant d’Utrecht. Pour aller à Naarden Vesting (c’est-à-dire la ville fortifiée) par les transports en commun, 2 options: le train jusqu’à la gare de Naarden-Bussum, puis le car 110 en direction de Weesp. Ou bien le car (320 à partir d’Amsterdam Amstel, 321 depuis Amsterdam Zuid), correspondance à Muiden P+R pour le car 110 en direction de Naarden-Bussum. Descendre à l’arrêt Westwalstraat. Vous êtes alors à quelques minutes à pied de la forteresse, dont voici un plan.

Pour ceux qui arrivent en voiture : on peut se garer gratuitement au Bastion Nieuw Molen ou au parc Abri. Cependant, il risque d’y avoir pas mal d’embouteillages, notamment le weekend du 21-22 juin 2025 autour d’Amsterdam, à cause des fêtes à l’occasion du septcentcinquantenaire de la ville. Par ailleurs, à cause du sommet de l’OTAN à La Haye, on s’attend, là aussi, à des embouteillages (et à des routes barrées!) autour de cette ville entre le 22 et le 27 juin 2025. Les différents sites du Fotofestival Naarden se visitent du mardi au dimanche de 10h30 à 17 heures (certains sites n’ouvrant qu’à midi). L’ « Hôtel de la Ville » (Huis van de Stad, ancien hôtel de ville ou stadhuis) peut être fermée pendant une heure ou deux à cause des mariages. Le festival se termine le 6 juillet 2025. Les tickets (adulte, tarif plein : €19,50 ; séniors 67+, Museumkaart, groupes : € 17,50 ; Jeunes 12-25 ans : € 12,50 ; carte CJP : € 9,75 ; enfants < 12 ans : gratuit) s’achètent soit en ligne, soit sur place dans la remise jaune (Gele Loods, L sur le plan).

Photography among the fortifications

You are in Amsterdam or thereabouts, and you feel oppressed by the heat and the number of (other) tourists? Leave town, visit the nearby countryside of the « Gooi« -region, and in particular the fortified town of Naarden and its biennial Photo Festival ! The theme of this 2025 edition, the 18th already: « Home » ! A theme to be interpreted in multiple ways, as the exhibited photos show.

For some, « home » is where one lives, for others, it’s where your roots lie – or your parents’ roots, or even those of your grandparents… Recently, I heard a Canadian cousin of mine say how astonished she was to feel so at home when she first set foot in the Netherlands, where her father was born and which he left as an 8-year old. « No wonder, » her uncle replied, « it’s in your DNA… »

Some photos may seem rather abstract, either by their composition or because the photographer reshaped it as it were, sometimes adding other materials, to obtain his or her ultimate symbol of « home ». Stephan Keppel takes photos of minor details of towns and cities, then adds graphic elements to create a new image.

As you can see, the photos are shown everywhere in this little town, from the former townhall (stadhuis; now « Hall of the Town » or « Huis van de Stad ») to the church tower, and also, of course, in and around the bulwark. As a consequence, not all sites are accessible to everyone, due to steep staircases or cobbled streets. But believe me, there is still a lot to see for everyone. It’s worth the trip.

Practical information

Naarden – or more precisely, Naarden Vesting, for the town of Naarden is larger than just the old, walled part – is located about 25 kilomètres south-east of Amsterdam, and at a comparable distance from Utrecht. To reach Naarden Vesting by public transport, you have 2 options: the train to Naarden-Bussum, then bus 110 to Weesp. The other option is bus 320 at Amsterdam Amstel station, or 321 at Amsterdam Zuid station. Get off at Muiden P+R and take bus 110 to Naarden-Bussum. The stop at Naarden Vesting is called Westwalstraat.

For those who arrive by car : free parking at Bastion Nieuw Molen or at the Abri parking lot. However, traffic may be very dense during the weekend of 21-22 June 2025 around Amsterdam, because of the 750th anniversary of this town. Traffic to and from The Hague may be extremely dense, too (and there may be road closures!) between 22 and 27 June 2025, because of the NATO summit. For updates, see anwb/verkeer .

The differents sites of the Fotofestival Naarden can be visited from Tuesday till Sunday between 10.30 am till 5 pm (although some sites do not open before 12 noon). The « Hall of the Town » (Huis van de Stad, former townhall or stadhuis) may happen to be closed for an hour or two, when there are marriages. The festival ends 6 July 2025. Tickets (adult, full fare: €19,50 ; senior citizens (67+), Museum card, groups : € 17,50 ; 12-25 years old: € 12,50 ; CJP card : € 9,75 ; children < 12 : free) can be bought either online, either on the spot in the « yellow shed » (Gele Loods, L on the map).
